It's a Pirate's Life - Character Design
When two playful pretend pirate Octopi, Octavia and Blinky, stumble upon the spirit a suspicious submerged skeleton named Skully they knew their life was about to change. Will they be able to handle all that they ocean throws at them?
The artwork above depicts the three main characters in "It's a Pirates Life", a personal video game project.
This is my final character line up for Skully, Octavia and Blinky! You can see my process for these characters in the images below.
Originally, Octavia and Blinky were going to be one character. However, after spending some time doing thumbnails, and thinking about the story a bit more, I thought it would be fun to create two octopi characters. Above is my initial sketches.
Next, I moved on to Skully. I knew I wanted him to be a Skeleton, but since this game is meant for all ages, I didn't want him to be too scary. These are my first drawings.
Color comps are some of my favorite things to do, so I spent a lot of time trying out different colors for these two.
For Skully, I wanted him to be a bit less bright, since he had been trapped under water for several years.
